Abstract
Introduction: The umbilical stump is a small part of the umbilical cord that remains after birth, and needs essential care to prevent the development of pathologies at the site. Objective: This work aims to describe the care with the umbilical stump of newborns from theoretical reflections. Methodology: Reflective research, carried out with the reading of the Ministry of Health manuals, articles and books referring to the theme. Results: The most important result is the health education that needs to be carried out since prenatal care, teaching parents about the cleaning of the umbilical stump and the proper care with it, until it is released from the newborn's skin. Final Considerations: Prevention and health promotion are essential factors for the care of the newborn, becoming an important lake for nursing practice.
