Abstract
The terms ostomia, ostoma, stoma or ostomy originate from the Greek term stóma, and designate a mouth or opening. Depending on the part of the body where the procedure will be performed, ostomies acquire a specific term, being classified as digestive (gastrostomy and jejunostomy), urinary (urostomy), respiratory (tracheostomy) and intestinal (colostomy, ileostomy). Thus, the multidisciplinary team must establish links, thus enabling the approach to the needs resulting from changes in the social, family, nutritional and psychological aspects of these patients, contributing positively to the quality of life of ostomized patients.
