ANALYSIS OF THE IMPACT OF CROHN'S DISEASE ON THE GROWTH AND DEVELOPMENT OF CHILD WITH COMORBIDITY: AN INTEGRATIVE REVIEW

Abstract

Crohn's disease (CD) stands out as an inflammatory condition of the gastrointestinal tract in which, when developed in childhood, it has the potential to interfere negatively in the growth and development of the patient. Therefore, the present integrative review addresses the losses in growth, as well as their causes. Objective: analysis in the literature of the impacts caused by Crohn's disease on the child's growth and development. Methodology: an integrative review is specialized, following the 6 recommended steps. The following descriptors were used: “Crohn's Disease”, “Child” and “Growth and Development” and the Boolean operator “AND”. Inclusion criteria were: adequacy to the theme and to remain present in the filters “last five years”, “human”, “English”, “Spanish” and “Portuguese”; the exclusion made using the criteria: duplicate articles, text not available, review articles and escape from the topic. There was application in the VHL, PubMed and SciELO databases. Results: Initially, 645 articles were found, 106 of which were selected after applying the filters. Of these, 95 were removed for escaping the theme and one (1) for duplication. Thus, ten (10) articles were included for analysis, in which four (4) were included in a cohort study, one (1) in retrospective cross-sectional studies and five (5) in Outcomes research. Conclusion: It is concluded that pediatric patients with CD have a higher risk of altering their growth pattern and reaching a development pattern below the general population. The main changes are demarcated in the speed of growth, height and pubertal development, with emphasis on the male sex, who have these more accentuated changes.
